Literature Text
when each raising
of your coffee cup
takes both hands
and a strong gut
it’s awfully hard to
keep drinking
but there are
other, better days
when happy things
come easy as rain
smiles race
down window panes
and puddles of kept promises
kiss and play at my feet
and my hair is still
damp from those days
and I’ve learned
the patience necessary
to just wait.

A world of porcelain people
We live in
a world full
of pretty
façades; everyone
is a living
masquerade
in this
day and age:
pick up your
smiling face
at daybreak and
drape it over the
violet stains
beneath your
eyelids;
walk around
aimlessly -
we are all
sleepwalkers,
eyes open but
closed.
we are all pretty porcelain people
living in a pretty porcelain world
and our masks
are starting
to crack.
(and reveal the ugly truth)

That Girl Who Always Smiles
That girl who always smiles
Cheerful and nice, always
That girl who always smiles
And tries her best to help you
That girl who always smiles
That laughs on rainy days
That girl who always smiles
Who listens to what you have to say
That girl who always smiles
Smiling until you look away

the last poem i write about my depression
i want you to know that it took me years
to figure out the worst part. cause, sure, there’s
so many bad parts, there’s so many moments
when dragging air through your mouth feels
like letting in all the water. your body becomes
your own battlefield, your mind—the most
ruthless enemy. it does not cut corners.
it will not spare you. it will leave
no summer-tinted memory untouched.
every exit sign looks like a suggestion.
if you ask someone if they are happy they will say yes
but they will not look you in the eyes.
you will never learn how to feel permanent.
you will drink grape juice and try to remember how it felt
to be holy.

Not my best work, but important to me. This piece came from remembering that break is only a couple more weeks.
